Norway just raised the stakes over deep sea mining
The Jan. 9 determination makes Norway the first country to formally authorize seabed mining activities in its waters.
French nuclear fuels company Orano’s operational activities at its Arlit and Akokan sites in Niger are continuing, as well as at its headquarters in Niamey, the company said on Tuesday.
Asked whether Orano’s uranium exports had been interrupted – as some media reported – an Orano spokeswoman said that at this point there had been no suspension of its partnership agreement with the state of Niger.
Niger, which has Africa’s highest-grade uranium ores, produced 2,020 metric tons of uranium in 2022, about 5% of world mining output, according to the World Nuclear Association.
